Discover Port Of Call

Stepping into Port Of Call on 838 Esplanade Ave, New Orleans, LA 70116, United States, immediately feels like entering a place where tradition meets casual comfort. From the moment I walked in, the warm, slightly rustic atmosphere made it clear that this isn’t just another diner-it’s a local institution with a personality all its own. Over the years, I’ve returned multiple times, and each visit has offered something unique, whether it’s the bustling lunch crowd or the mellow evening vibe that invites slow conversations over hearty meals.

One of the first things that strikes visitors is the menu, which balances classic American diner staples with New Orleans flair. Their signature sandwiches are legendary; the Roast Beef Po’ Boy, for instance, arrives perfectly toasted and generously stuffed, making it a favorite among both locals and tourists. On my last visit, I noticed a table nearby digging into the Monte Cristo, which is often described in reviews as “decadent” yet surprisingly light, a testament to the kitchen’s attention to both flavor and portioning. The careful preparation of each dish reflects a methodical process honed over years, showing that this isn’t a place just for quick bites-it’s a place where culinary expertise is on display in every plate.

Drinks are another highlight, from classic sodas to hand-spun milkshakes that have earned mention in travel guides and local food blogs. A friend who works in the New Orleans hospitality industry shared that Port Of Call has maintained a loyal following precisely because of these consistent, well-crafted offerings. Research on dining satisfaction often emphasizes the importance of reliability and consistency, and this restaurant perfectly embodies that principle. Even on the busiest nights, servers maintain a cheerful demeanor, guiding guests through the menu and recommending local favorites based on personal experience.

The location itself is worth noting. Nestled in a part of the city known for its historic charm, the diner benefits from a steady stream of visitors exploring nearby attractions. I’ve personally timed visits to coincide with evening strolls along the Esplanade Avenue area, and it’s always convenient to stop by without having to venture far from sightseeing routes. The accessibility and visibility of the location have contributed to its strong reputation, with multiple travel sites and dining authorities listing it among New Orleans’ must-visit spots.

What sets Port Of Call apart is more than just its food or location; it’s the atmosphere cultivated by years of experience and community presence. Staff members often share cooking tips or stories behind signature dishes, which adds a layer of authenticity rarely found in modern chain establishments. Local food critics from reputable sources like The Times-Picayune have highlighted how the diner balances casual dining with meticulous preparation, a combination that earns both repeat customers and glowing reviews.

For anyone curious about the specifics, the preparation process behind their charcoal-grilled steaks is particularly noteworthy. The chef sears each cut over an open flame to lock in juices, then finishes it with a secret seasoning blend that enhances the natural flavor without overpowering it. I’ve witnessed this firsthand during a visit to the open kitchen, and the attention to detail mirrors professional culinary standards often recommended by experts at the Culinary Institute of America. Even small touches, like perfectly crisp fries or the freshness of the salad ingredients, demonstrate a commitment to quality that elevates the overall dining experience.

Overall, the combination of flavorful dishes, a welcoming environment, and a prime New Orleans location makes this diner stand out. Each visit feels like a small adventure in taste and comfort, offering insight into why it has maintained a trusted reputation among locals and visitors alike. It’s a spot where experience, expertise, and trustworthiness converge in every meal, making it a genuine highlight of the city’s dining scene.

  • If you come 20 min wait and wait for food is maybe 30 also . We have been drinking waiting if I have the monsoon be ready to get drunk I was waiting for food still and I’m feeling wooozy. But it’s small restaurant that’s why it’s wait. You can wait outside she will cal you. Ok so we ate! I ordered the burger and baked potatoe. So the burger had a Smokey flavor . Is all no seasoning no salt no pepper just a smoke flavor. For one who eat burgers all the time that practically awesome mmm it’s just plain. Should have put some a1 steak sauce or something. But they are big and thick. But relatively small size. Potato is big also very good. Should had a steak but as I read on reviews they say about the same. And if u have the monsoon no smoking a cigarette you might start a fire . It’s strong so strong . I drank a 1/4 of it and I got drunk but then again I had not ate anything before that . So yes this is my review I’m pretty picky about my burger I like run down old place who knows how to make pretty yummy Burgers then to go because everyone says so. But we had two people say this place had great burgers ! So we did mmmm it was ok minus the wait yah not worth for 50$ for two people yah! There is no parking unless you are staying close by or walking distance. We walked to the majority of our vacation.

  • If you’re in New Orleans and craving a burger, look no further than Port of Call. Their cheeseburger is perfection and legendary. Paired with their signature baked potato, it’s a meal that feels both comforting and unique to New Orleans. The laid back, cozy atmosphere makes Port of Call full of character, with staff who make you feel at home. This is not just one of the best burgers in New Orleans...it’s one of the best I’ve had anywhere.

  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely incredible! Hands down the best burger I’ve had in a long time—juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The loaded baked potato was the perfect side, hearty and delicious. And if you go, you have to try Neptune’s Monsoon—it's a must! Great vibes, great food, definitely worth the visit!

  • Just a cool local divey spot with great Naval decor all over. Menu is super limited (which i love because it means they know what they are good at ) of just steaks and burgers. Burgers come with a baked potato which you can customize, and they know how to make a proper Bloody Mary.

  • A great little intimidate bar with tasty burgers. They come with baked potatoes, which is fun. The drinks are delicious, tropical, and generous. I send folks looking for a great burger here. It's about time I did a review. Port of Call is much beloved.

  • If you want really good drinks and a good vibe, I recommend this place. The only downfall is that this place is very small and does not fit a lot of people. Good burgers, nothing to special. I wish the loaded potatoes had real bacon

  • This is the most delicious well priced restaurants in the area. They have two options here. Steak and burgers w/salad and baked potatoes. That's it. They do it well. My ONLY issue is they use canned mushrooms(yuck). Now I know i wont get them again. The steaks were perfectly cooked so easy to cut. The cheese pull on the potatoes was top notch. 3 dollar soda w the cup to go is awesome and their alcohol drinks are so fun. Wine selection is small.
